The people are super friendly and the country is beautiful. Hey — did you enter Venezuela via land or air? If by land, are you still granted a 90 day visa like you would be if you arrived by air? Hi Paddy, It will depend on the passport you personally hold of course, but advice if travelling on a UK passport is if arriving overland or by sea, you must get a visa in advance from your nearest Venezuelan Embassy or Consulate.
Being poor in Venezuela is not the same like being poor in another country. I was lucky to have such a happy childhood and wild teenage years. Do your friends still recommend not travelling to Venezuela at this time? I have a friend that lives in Maracay that keeps telling me it is safe as long as I stay aware of my surroundings.
Sounds like a very irresponsible thing to encourage people to travel to a country that is deemed less safe than war zones like Syria. Avoid at all cost people. Your life is on the line. A bit weird, I know! Anyhow… thanks again for gathering the courage to venture into Venezuela and look beyond our crisis and find all the beauty hidden behind it! Take care and God bless you!
Hey, any Venezuelans still on this thread? Is it safe for an American woman to travel there alone? I am being sent for work and I just want some safety tips before I get there. Hey Ava! Is safe! Really interesting article! What does that have to do with politics?
Politicians are against toilet paper?? I am from Venezuela too, I am so honored that you loved my country. I emigrated from Venezuela 14 years ago and I go there every year for the holidays. Every one, despite the current situation, is so happy and content, dancing and drinking of course! Thank you for admiring the beauty of Venezuela, their women, even las gorditas had a place in your description and I thank you for that, for taking the time of admiring! Hi, I wanna go to Venezuela and I want to cross the border from Maicao Colombia , that was the way you used to get there?
Well, it seems like Venezuela is paradise for foreigners and hell for locals. Even the mention of visiting Venezuela provokes people to spout off about how dangerous the country is, yet people forget that there is more to a place then what the media portrays.
I love that you mentioned how friendly the Venezuelan people are. We forget that amidst the sensationalized media are normal people, like me and you, just living life. I have since spent 2 years studying Spanish so I have better skills before I return to South America!
I am deathly afraid of cable cars. Why do I do this to myself? The world may never know… I had a mini panic attack on the way up as soon as I felt the height, but once I was able to calm down, the views are amazing. Thank you for this painfully accurate post! There is so much expectation regarding beauty when I say I am from Venezuela. Thank you for your wonderful words about my country. I love this!!! People are extremely friendly though even for locals, you never have a weekend with nothing to do in Venezuela.
Btw…The perfect Spanish thing tho where did you get that from? I know exactly what you mean about the girls dude; some of them are truly, truly stunning — absolutely amazing and so much fun!
Venezuela has its fair share of fatties.
There is something magical about this place. The way it sits surrounded by mountains, with the sun going down, the colours gaining saturation. There are kids playing in a nearby playground and we hear them laugh as we sip our cold beer. At moments like this, you can really imagine what life here could be. The following day we are ready to see the city centre. We noticed that our guide is a bit nervous. There are a lot of people in red t-shirts with pictures of Maduro gathering in the corner.
Well, with our blonde hair, we certainly stick out here. We decide to move on and visit a nearby cathedral, but when we walk out a huge group of militia marches opposite us followed by more protesters. The street ahead is suddenly closed for traffic too and there seems to be a large congregation of people on motorcycles gathering.
We better get out of before we get caught up in the middle. Avoiding the main street, we cut through towards our car passing some street sellers with books. A single book sells for as little as Bolivars. That equals 6 cents. We are in too much of a rush for us to verify this. Our guide asks us to continue to move quickly with him through this part of the city so we can make it back to the car and leave the area.
Another drive across the city and we enter the grounds of a hospital, a funky and colourful looking building that seems to be in a desperate need of fixing up. But inside, life goes on and as our guide tells us, during the 8-day long blackout, the doctors did surgery with just the light from their cell phones. The University grounds are huge and lush with green parks.
There are many buildings from the cafeteria to different faculties. Free fuel? Sounds like a joke? So as part of the socialist reforms, it gives its citizens free gas. All you do is tip the guy who pumps your fuel. We arrived at the gas station, fueled up with about 20 litres of gas and paid with bolivars which is currently about 0,02 USD. Yup, 2 cents. And just like that our time in Venezuela came to an end. We had the most amazing two days and have learned so much about this truly unique country.
Once the situation here improves, we would love to return to see the rest of it. This country has so much to offer for any visitor looking for either beaches, adventure, a culinary or cultural experience. But the people of Venezuela will be probably the main reasons to return. How to find and book cheap flights.
