Peterson's attorneys claim the recordings are suspect because of the involvement of a Will County judge and members of Glasgow's office in obtaining permission from the informant to record the conversations, and the defense attorneys unsuccessfully sought to bar them from being played at trial.

Glasgow said he listened to only about 15 minutes of recordings before asking the Illinois attorney general's office to take over the case. Based on 36 years of experience in law enforcement, from my listening of the tape, it was clear to me there was going to be my demise.

Peterson, 62, faces a sentence of up to 60 years if convicted of solicitation of murder for hire along with solicitation of murder. Smith is scheduled to return to the stand Tuesday. The trial is expected to last about a week.
